In 2023, 647 cases of DNS Abuse were analyzed, domains that support malware, phishing, pharming, botnets, or spam dissemination activity, with 130 cases to be confirmed and reported. Most of these cases (89%) were the result of phishing attempts. The information was released today, on Safer Internet Day, by .PT Security Operations Center (PTSOC), in its annual report.

The report presents a summary of the main events and trends that were observed in 2023 in the field of cybersecurity and puts into perspective the main challenges anticipated for 2024.

In the document, PTSOC also reveals that 164 events were reported on its public incident notification channel. Of all cases identified and reported, 82% were mitigated in less than 8 days.
About the 2023's top cyberthreats, the report highlights the rise of Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS), the prevalence of social engineering, the rise of denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and the persistence of login attempts/ brute force attacks.

Regarding the outlook for 2024, the analysis points out the main cyberattacks to consider the continued growth of the RaaS model, with a shift in focus towards small and medium-sized companies due to the growing involvement of governments in the defense of critical infrastructures.

Supply Chain attacks, where criminals infiltrate systems through a partner or service provider with privileged access, will also be an important attack vector. Furthermore, social engineering will continue to be a challenge, with the need to reinforce awareness campaigns and implement more means to limit the impact of these attacks, including the use of Zero Trust principles.
