35 years since the first .pt domain was registered

On 3 October 1991, the first Portuguese domain was registered. This marks 35 years since Portugal gained its own address in a global infrastructure that would go on to transform the way we communicate, work, learn and shop.

Since then, digital transformation has become part of everyday life. According to the Digital Economy in Portugal 2025 study, 89% of the Portuguese population uses the Internet and 59% of users already shop online.

35 years ago, the challenge was to get connected. Today, it is to build trust in the digital space. A .pt domain is a form of online identification and a sign of a connection to Portugal, its community, its economy and its language.
