.PT supported the new EU Kids Online study. This study is part of the strategic projects of the NOVA Institute of Communication (ICNOVA) and the Interdisciplinary Centre of Social Sciences (CICS.NOVA)
Key findings:
In Portugal, 85% of children and young people (aged 9–17) use generative AI.
- Generative AI is already highly present in the digital practices of Portuguese respondents, 10 percentage points above the European average. Usage increases and becomes more diversified with age.
- Almost half of children and young people in Portugal use generative AI for school-related tasks: summarizing or explaining a long text, and helping with assignments across different subjects.
- A quarter of respondents use these tools for emotional and personal support, again 10 percentage points above the European average.
- Gender differences, and especially socioeconomic differences, suggest the persistence of a digital divide, in line with European results. Testimonies reveal nuances shaped by social and individual characteristics.
